Kevin L Brown, Photographer bio picture

Hi there :) Welcome to Kevin L Brown's (my) Blog!

Hi! My name is Kevin *L* Brown and I'm a midwest based photographer. Like all other photographers on the planet, I love what I do.

I like to believe what sets me apart is my sense of humor and personality. I'm very easy going, and I think that's what seems to make all the difference.

I'm in love with my wife, my silly kids, God and movies. Yep, movies. They inspire me and I like to mix in a "cinematic" appeal to my photos when at all possible. So please feel free to poke around (subscribe to the RSS feed - if you know how to use it) :).

I use this blog-thingee as a way to share what I like and things of personal interest. Hopefully it will give you a little insight into my life which, inevitably, influences the way I use my camera. I'd LOVE to hear from you and please enjoy this Blog-a-mathingee.

StudioLead’s Pricing Reduced to $59!

I’ve been working hard on capturing some truly wonderful people’s weddings and portraits this year! Also at the same time I’ve been working hard on developing some unique client management software for other photographers! Recently StudioLead’s pricing has been greatly reduced to better serve photographers of all levels & also providing a free month of the feature rich and truly valuable online services that were built specifically for StudioLead.

I invite all photographers to take a look and try out the demo version (available for both Mac and PC)!

If you have any questions, please feel free to contact me :)

Photographers: StudioLead.com Launched!

StudioLead has finally been launched! After many months of development and testing, StudioLead Photographer Edition Version One is now live and available for purchase or demo.

StudioLead will serve as a strong desktop based alternative to the growing number of online-only client management systems. I noticed how the data was “trapped” by those sorts of businesses as a possible effort to encourage monthly fees as there was no real way to export the data. Also, my fear was “what if you lose your net connection when you need that info in order to book a client, or check on date availability for a wedding booking?”. You’d be out of luck.

So as an answer to this, StudioLead was born! The data is 100% yours, because it will reside first and foremost on your desktop.

For a much smaller monthly fee than the online-only based client managers, you will have access to upload all that data to view anywhere in the world, plus utilize StudioLead’s digital secure contract sending and signing options for your clients, as well as upselling of products that you enter to add on to packages. There are a multitude of different modules being developed for the online portion of StudioLead and all suscribers will also get FREE upgrades to the powerful desktop software. Go give it a try and see what you’re missing!

Two more versions of StudioLead will be released in the near future specifically designed for Videographers and DJ’s!

Drobo and (not) Mozy Offsite Storage

I’ve been becoming increasingly paranoid about losing any data when it comes to my growing photography business. I was searching a while for something that would fit my workflow with all my different projects and especially an exponentially increasing amount of data. I believe I’ve found something that fits my small business for my data backup and redundancy needs.

It’s called the Drobo.
I’m very determined to not lose a single bit of data as my business depends on it. The drobo boasts the ability to save the data redundantly across a total of 4 drive bays. I’ll be packing in some western digital 1 TB 7200rpm drives. I’m excited for it to arrive so I can get started securing my data further and moving away from single 1TB external drives with zero redundancy. Ugh!

I was definitely inspired to go ahead and invest in something stronger after reading and watching the ALWAYS amazing Chase Jarvis and Vincent LaForet blogs.

View Chase’s amazing “Complete workflow for photo and video”!  http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Y-6EQo6it7Y

Chase’s blog posting: http://blog.chasejarvis.com/blog/2010/06/workflow-and-backup-for-photo-video/

Video genius Vincent LaForet’s  blog posting: http://blog.vincentlaforet.com/2010/06/23/video-post-workflow-and-backup-strategy/

I hope one day to be able to aquire the truly awesome G-Tech raid products that Chase uses, but it sounds like the Drobo is just perfect for my needs.

Something that is equally as important as local redundant storage, is secure offsite internet accessible & unlimited storage. I then discovered great reviews about Mozy. So I promptly signed up for that. Update: Mozy estimated that it would take nearly 9 months for all my data just for the initial upload. lol. Yeah, so there goes that idea.

What I’ll be doing instead is having my Drobo backup to another external drive via “Super Duper!” backup software. Swapping that external drive with another one just like it every week from a super secret offsite location.

My new Client Management system

For the past 6 months I’ve been working on something that I feel is going to help many other Photographers, Videographers and DJ’s in the industry. It’s about a month away from launching to the general public.

It’s called StudioLead Virtual Client Management.

I wanted to make something first and foremost where the user OWNS the data where it is entered on their desktop via the software. Then it can be uploaded to a special server database that compliments the desktop software making the vital client information mobile while you’re on the job or at a meeting.

There are many “Web-Based” client management systems that are used by many photographers. I noticed something that I didn’t like about those online-only services.

What if you lose your internet connection & you have someone on the phone wanting to book you?

What if that company goes under? What happens to all that critial private client data you’ve entered? Most of the services offer no realistic or completely guaranteed way to get 100% of your data back.

So I thought, “I’m going to build a system for myself that will be cheaper and the data will be mine for all eternity”. I don’t like to depend on other systems like that which can fail me or my business. So the further along I got in building the software, the more I realized how valuable this sort of thing could be to other photographers. Which then grew into the idea of utilizing the same services for Videographers and DJ’s. I’ve placed some screen shots of the software as it is now, I’m nearly done with the financial and referral statistics part of it. There’s quite a number of functions so I couldn’t place all the screen shots, but it should give you an idea of what it’s capable of.

In addition to above shown functions, StudioLead will have:
*Optional subscription based online uploading of all data for greater portability
*Instant Digital Contract Signing by the Client

*Online package pricing & product add-on by the client to build their perfect session complete with products.
*Automated pre-scheduled emails for birthdays and anniversaries along with automated session reminders emails to the client.
*Statistics generation for sales, pending balances, referrers, locations, and more
*Call logging
*Payment & Balance recording
*Custom workflows per each individual client session with a real time bar-graph to show your progress per client.
*Ease of use and great affordability with a stable platform for Mac OSX and PC users
*Much more…

Man, I sound like an infomercial! Sorry about that. I’m just extremely stoked to be nearly finished with something that can really make a big difference for some great folks in the photography industry. The Videography and DJ versions will be coming along in the near future. :)
